Agatha Christie (1890–1976) was an English crime writer and the most widely published novelist in history, with some two billion copies sold in more than a hundred languages. She wrote her first detective novel on a dare from her sister while dispensing medicines in a hospital during the First World War — the job that gave her the poisons her murderers use so accurately. In 1926 she disappeared for eleven days, was found in a Harrogate hotel under an assumed name, and never explained it. She created Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple, and wrote The Mousetrap, the longest-running play in the world.
