Émile Zola (1840–1902) was a French novelist and a leading figure in literary naturalism. His twenty-volume Rougon-Macquart cycle examines family life and French society during the Second Empire. His novels include L'Assommoir, Nana, Germinal, and La Bête humaine. He also became known for his public defense of Alfred Dreyfus.
