Published in 1922, Pădurea spânzuraților follows Apostol Bologa, a Romanian from Transylvania serving as an officer in the Austro-Hungarian army during the First World War. At first he treats military discipline and the judgement of authority as firm moral anchors, but his certainty begins to weaken as experience exposes the human cost of those principles. Liviu Rebreanu builds the novel around a conflict between institutional duty and individual conscience, sharpened by the multinational character of the empire and by Bologa’s Romanian identity. The front is both a physical landscape and a moral pressure chamber in which loyalty, fear, belief and belonging can no longer remain abstract ideas.

About the author
Liviu Rebreanu (1885–1944) was a Romanian novelist and playwright, widely regarded as a founding figure of the modern Romanian novel. Known for his realism and psychological depth, he explored rural life, social inequality, and the conflicts between personal desire and moral responsibility. His most celebrated novels, Ion and Forest of the Hanged, remain essential works of Romanian literature.
