About the author
Jules Verne (1828–1905) was a French novelist, sent to Paris to study law and lost to the theatre instead. His publisher Pierre-Jules Hetzel gave him the frame of his career — the Voyages Extraordinaires, fifty-four novels intended to describe the whole known world — and Verne wrote them out of periodicals, scientific papers and an index of notes said to have run to twenty thousand cards. He is one of the most translated authors who has ever lived, and the machines he furnished his stories with, the submarine and the moon shot in particular, arrived close enough to the description to make his reputation as a prophet.
